Mathematics of Networks in Science and Medicine

Abstract : Networks are directed graphs. They are well known and have been studied in Mathematics,  Computer Science, Engineering, but also in the Social Sciences. The perhaps most prominent network is the world wide web. Dynamical networks where the nodes and edges may develop and change in space and time, governed by differential equations, random processes or games have been less  investigated. However, they play a crucial role in physics, chemistry, material science, biology and medicine, ranging from atomic to macroscopic scale.  One such example is the neurological network in the human brain. In this talk we will present some of these networks, their relevance in the respective application, and their challenges to mathematics and algorithm design. The work reflects research questions in the focus area Kiel Nano Surface and Interface Science  (KiNSIS) at the Christian-Albrechts Universität zu Kiel (Kiel University) in Kiel, Germany.
